AI is changing two parts of ecommerce at once: how teams run their stores and how customers discover products. For merchants, the useful question is where these tools remove friction—and what needs to be in place before they can help.
Our recommendation at Genesis Algorithms is to start with the store itself. Accurate product information, clear policies and dependable buying journeys remain worthwhile investments, whatever channel brings the next customer.
Two changes worth separating
Shopify offers AI tools inside its administration environment, while its agentic storefronts connect product discovery with supported AI channels. These serve different purposes: one helps your team work; the other creates additional ways for customers to encounter your catalogue. Treating them as separate workstreams makes it easier to set goals and assess results.
Use Sidekick for a specific task
Sidekick is Shopify’s assistant within the admin. Shopify documents capabilities including guidance, content creation and completing tasks through everyday language. Its setup guidance says store changes require your approval. Explore Sidekick and its approval process.
Start with a task your team can check confidently. Give the assistant context, define the intended result and review what it proposes. A useful pilot might be drafting a product description from verified specifications. Measure the time saved after review, rather than how quickly a first draft appears.
Keep product facts separate from generated language
Shopify’s automatic description tools can help create a starting draft, but merchants remain responsible for what they publish. Shopify’s product description guidance makes that responsibility explicit.
For example, a furniture description needs more than an appealing mood. Dimensions, materials, finish, care instructions and delivery information help a buyer decide whether an item fits their needs. Give an AI tool those verified facts; do not ask it to invent missing specifications. Check that the final wording has not turned an estimate into a promise.
Understand what agentic storefronts offer
Shopify’s agentic storefronts support discovery and purchasing through AI channels. Shopify Catalog provides structured product information to these experiences. Eligibility, channel support and the purchase flow should be checked for your store and market before making plans around them. See Shopify’s agentic storefronts overview and catalogue guidance.
Being eligible for a channel is not a promise that your products will be recommended, or that every customer will complete checkout inside a chat. Review the available settings in your own admin and follow the journey as a customer would.
A practical readiness checklist
- Product information: resolve missing specifications, ambiguous variants and inconsistent titles.
- Operational data: check that prices and stock agree across your store and connected systems.
- Customer answers: make delivery, returns and product limitations easy to find.
- Buying journeys: test mobile product selection, cart and checkout, including custom features.
- International content: review translated descriptions and market-specific information.
- Ownership: assign someone to approve generated content and monitor changes.
Measure useful outcomes
Choose a small set of questions before a pilot. Is the team spending less time on repetitive work? Are customers finding the information they need? Where identifiable AI referrals exist, do they lead to useful enquiries or orders? Keep the measurement limits visible: a referral report cannot capture every influence on a buying decision.
A change in traffic alone does not tell you whether an AI feature caused it. Compare a sensible baseline, document other changes and look for patterns over time.
Where Genesis Algorithms can help
We can connect this preparation to your Shopify development, system integrations and AI search visibility work. The starting point is a clear brief: what your store needs to communicate, which systems it depends on and which customer journeys must work reliably.
We would prioritise improvements that help customers today, then test new AI capabilities against that foundation.
